I reaaranged the Whites tank yesterday, added some upright cork bark tubes etc. I have heard the males calling before and am familiar to their sound.

Today when I sprayed the tank, a couple of males where in the cork bark tube with a female.

When I sprayed them the males made noises like demented chickens, I kid you not it was most weird, never heard a noise quite like it, sounded like a cross between a baby crying and a demented chicken! Anyone got any ideas please?

Females quite often vocalise when sprayed directly this sounds nothing like the males call, or it could just be the sound was distorted be the cork tube.

Must have been the females then, the sound was so loud it was not down to distortion, very eerie noise it was!
