Was in Wilkinsons the other day to get some plastic trays and they had some mini coolers, so i picked one up to try and keep the temps down a bit, was so impressed i went back and bought a couple more.
I could not find them on there website so cant put up a link but they are like a small air con unit on castors called mini cooler/heater ES 167.
Basically you fill them with water and two ice packs and cools the air in the room, they are remote control have various heat, cool and speed settings built in timer and have an occelating exhaust also they have a built in partical and carbon filter to clean the air and built in ioniser, look smart and all for 50.00 and the good thing is at max cooling speed they are only 70w so cheap to run, the heat settings are 1 and 2kw.
These are by no way on par with a portable air conn unit for cooling but they do make a difference. If i cant find a link for them i'll try and put a pic up. _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

Nice one Jas..we brought an air cooler last year from homebase but didn't find it much better than a normal fan.. also had to add ice packs to it..your one sounds like its doing the job though.. _________________

Glad this topic has come up. I have managed to blag the brick built utility room that adjoins the rear of our garage.
Measures 8 foot 3 inches in both directions, am going to use it to house my temperate amphibians. Has electric and lighting etc. Flat roof felted etc.
I need to maintain temp around the 55f - 60f mark. I have two choices, mobile air con unit or a plumbed in mini system that will heat in the winter also.
Obviously I want to spend as little as possible, but I dont want to waste money either on something that does not do the job required. Would prefer to spend that bit extra and get it right first time.
It's not a huge room but to maintain the temps required it needs to do more than just lightly chill the air.
So if anyone has any good info or advice it would be much appreciated thanks. Mobile air con unit or plumbed in system? _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Yeah they cant cool the air temps by loads but in my set ups they seem to be keeping temps to an acceptable level and when the weather cools again ill probably just keep running them just to clean the air as they are very cheap to run.
Rick i just use a mobile air con, excellent but do take up a bit of floor space, a plumbed one could be put up high out of the way, but put in some thought about where its positioned as you dont want it blasting cold air onto a couple of vivs making these more chilled than the others in the room. _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

My advice would be to get a proper air cooler which has a duct to pass hot air out of the room. Homebase have one at £150 at present.
The evaporative type with no duct are virtually useless and a waste of money _________________ John

Sorted, had a word with a mate who runs his own air con installation business. He will be fitting one in for me ASAP. Good price to.
So temperate amphibian house will be up and running soon!
Much quicker than the garage conversion project _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk
