Johnny, you seem well meaning if perhaps a little defensive (unneccesarily). No one is slating you. Unfortunately, as soon as the word "Nile monitor" is mentioned, most conversations regarding it are then doomed to the negative. The truth is, very few people can provide comfortable living space for one. A 7ft animal, and one as active as a Nile monitor is more suited to a tennis court sized enclosure which few people can provide. I feel the same about Green Iguanas, which are also far more readily available then there are suitable homes for.
The advice that you have been given, although perhaps negative, is true. If having a "calm" or "quiet" animal is high on your list of requirements, then please think again. There are far more suitable species. This forum has some cracking specialists and a healthy population of monitor experts. They are not "know it alls" but are well worth listening too. If you can get their advice, I would heed it.
I really hope that you think again about the animal, and perhaps re-read the posts that you read. Don`t take it personally, but take it how it is, plain facts, from voices of experience. The advice to switch to another species is very good advice. The Nile monitor belongs in a zoo, or better still, on the Nile!
I hope you stay though Johnny, as I have found this forum by far the most genuine available. There are lots of very knowledgable and helpful people here. They just want to save you and the animal from the misery!

Your inability to not take every comment personally does not say much for your confidence, of which you will need much for this animal to do well with you.

I find it amazing in this day and age with all the info out there that people still put large monitors in such small tanks these animals need large areas they need varied habitat can you give a 7ft monitor an area it can actually swim in? let alone submerse itself in completely? Can you aswell as the pool offer this animal at least twice its size of dry land? Can you offer it a very varied diet? Can you devote the countless hours every day that may be required to tame this animal? And to tend to its enclosure which will need a fair bit of maintenance for large lizards make a large mess

I suspect you can offer none of the above and I suspect you will prove my point by either ignoring the many posts on here or coming back with the same sort of just give me than answers posts you already have. The problem is you are asking a group of people who don’t do quick fix tell you what you want to hear answers so your out of luck

i certainly will not prove your point, before i read your posts, (which i still believe is slating me,and by slating it feels like iam being treated as one of the idiots that just buys stuff from a pet shop and doesn't look after it which i certainly am not) i was already looking for a new permanent home for him. When i got him i wasn't sure i was going to keep him, more look after him until i could find a suitable place for him to go for the rest of his life, something which the guy i got him off didn't have time to do, hence me saying i got him to make sure he didn't go to some idiot, i was even thinking of giving him to a zoo like you mentioned as i have many friends in that part of the animal business. At the mo i feel he is very happy with me and isn't no where near 7 foot long so his housing is fine, his has a varied diet which will now include fish. I may not of done a lot of research on them before i got him as it was a bit of a quick decision but i can assure you i have done plenty on him now, that's why iam on forums such as this so I can get this advise. Iam not doubting the fact that y'all are experts and no what you are talking about its just the way you give people your advise. I will take your advise in and thanks to you all for giving me it but the majority of it wasn't needed in this case

that will always be the main priority, i think i have found a suitible home for him already to be honest to a guy who wants him as like you say, an awesome disply animal. Iam going down to see where he will be keeping him at weekend so i will let you know how its goes, sorry if i took your comments the wrong way it was just the way i saw it, it made me fell like i didnt have the animals best interests at heart when i did

just thought i would let you know that steve the nile went to his new home last night to an experienced keeper and he is gonna have a wonderfull life with him
