Good day to you all.
We are looking for experts and/or enthusiasts with a working knowledge of the largest reptilian species.
These people MUST have a desire to share the knowledge they have gained and a willingness to educate others with a less complete knowledge base.
Full details are available upon enquiry.
Please note Adverts similar to these will be showing up all over the internet over the next few days/weeks. To that end my return to every forum/location of these posts will be hard to accomplish.
Enquiries should be directed to:
retic@g-r-a-d-e.com
Thankyou for your time and my apologies for the disruption. _________________ TFA

Stu, it's fascinating. Out of all the "sections" within the hobby i have found the monitor keepers to be the most secretive. Why these keepers refuse to share the knowledge they have is beyond me.
Until i started this i thought that venemous and big snake keepers had the most elitist attitudes out there. How wrong i was _________________ TFA

Jas, while the message i posted on the majority of the forums/classifieds was a standard one which also has it's own standard reply to contact i did create several specific posts that where more informative. Unfortunately however 75% of all posts were removed.
Out of the 20+ places i posted my message is only remaining on 5. I also contacted a further 10-15 more places, these places however decided they would not accept me posting so i didn't even get to ask in these places.
An interesting note is out of ALL the countries i posted in (USA, UK, EU) i got the best responses from countries within the EU - the Netherlands in particular.
Funny old world........ _________________ TFA

Living here within the United States, exposed to the American Herpetocultural scene- especially the varanicultural scene, I regularly see this selfish, "I'm not sharing my information with you" attitude. One particular individual, who I am sure most of you are all familiar with, likes to toy with enthusiasts which ask him serious, honest questions about his own experiences. Instead of receiving straightforward answers, they are led around in circles, chastised, offered contradicting information or lies, and are often no better off than before they posted the query. This same individual refuses to publish any of his experiences, and is very vague in his descriptions of his experiences and techniques when posted on online herp fora.
I personally detest this selfish and arrogant attitude among breeders and enthusiasts. Herpetoculture is still in its 'dark ages' as far as I am concerned, and attitudes such as these do nothing but hinder this hobby's ability to progress and develop. Unfortunately what was once an honest, enthusiastically-driven hobby is now a money-driven industry/monster, where the threat of competition and lost earnings hinders people's willingness to share their experiences and knowledge with others.
I for one in favor of the progression of herpetoculture, therefore, I will do my part to help progress the hobby by sharing my thoughts, ideas, and experiences with whomever interested. This is why I have created my website, why I participate in online reptile fora, and why I take the time to write articles for publication.
I agree with the last poster, as I too feel that keepers and enthusiasts in Europe have been the most friendly and generous group of reptile-people that I have interacted with. I have yet to meet any varanid keeper who was reluctant to share their experiences with me, or in turn was not interested in hearing about my experiences and ideas. It is a two way system, and I suggest we all make use of it!
Cheers,
Bob |

Dan, the reasons few responded to your posts are simple and are probably not indicative of people being unwilling to share their secrets.
I can speak only for myself, of course. I've always been happy to share little I know with many people, either on the internet or at conferences, yet I ignored your post for two reasons:
1. It was very very vague. No indication whatsoever of what it is about.
2. I figured you'd get thousands of replies and would be hard pressed to sort the wheat from the chaff. Everyone on the internet sees themselves as an expert and I see pretty hopeless keepers on many sites that become 'experts' simply by posting frequently. Newbies think any name that becomes familiar on a forum must know what he/she is doing. |
