My little Red Ear Slider has a respiratory infection. Torquel is not doing very well. I've been delayed going to see a vet because of a major flood in NH. Roads were closed down (actually, were destroyed). Most businesses were close due to problems. My vet, that specialize in exotic animals, is a 30 mins drive (on a good day).
I finally was able to see her today (3 hours to get there because of road conditions). I've waited 6 days to be able to see her. Hope it's not to late. She put Torquel on some antibiotics. My problem right now is that I have never given any antibiotics by injections and will have to do so every three days for two weeks for three of my turtles (they are all in the same cage and have to treat them all. Was told that it was very contagious.) I can't bring them back to the vet for their shots because of the damages of the roads. I was lucky to get over there yesterday but the roads will be closed again for repairs. Many of the roads are not even there anymore. Neither are homes.
She did the best she could to teach me how to. Hope I can do it on Sunday.
The other thing that I must do and find it very difficult, is force feeding my turtle. The vet also gave me some liquid food to force feed in hopes to get some strenght back. I have to, excuse my language, 'wee' off my turtle to the point where she wants to attack me and the moment she opens her mouth, I squeeze in the liquid. In another word, on top of her having trouble breathing, I am also chocking her with this liquid. Poor thing. She is going to hate me dearly by the time I'm done with her. And I don't think she really gets to swallow it.
Does anyone have a better ideal at how I could force feed my turtle?
What about the survival rate of a turtle with a respiratory infection? She is at the point where she is swimming lopsided due to one of her lung collapsing. The turtle is also about 3 months old. Very small. She has lost a lot of weight. The vet opened up for me (I can't thank her enough for doing that) and will be in business in two weeks. She also had a lot of water damage and was close for repairs). I've made an appointment with her again in two weeks for the progress report. Hopefully, Torquel will be there to see the her again.
I'm open for ideals on force feeding. And wish me luck with the injections. Their is not much room on the leg for the needle. She said to find the muscle. Find the muscle? It hard enough to try to pull her leg out. She is a little bigger than the size of a quarter. Open for suggestions on that too. Need it by Sunday. Please help. I don't want to lose her.

I don't know anything about turtles, sorry.

Best of luck with it all, I guess you have to follow the vets advice, no matter how horrid it seems.

I suppose you must weigh up what may happen if you don't. There is a saying, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

Good luck!

That is so true but... I'm having a lot of problems getting her angry to the point of having her lash out at me and when she does, I'm having a hard time getting the food inside. The needle is scary but I know it's for her good and it has to be done. Just wish the vet was the one doing it. But the food, even the vet didn't have the answer. She said to try my best.
She must think I can do it since I have an appointment with her in two weeks. Either that or she thinks it will give me self confident.

By the way, if there are any single available men in the NH region, my vet is a single blond natural beauty, about 36 in age. Loves reptiles and has a heart of gold. Everything you could ask for in a woman.

Update on my baby turtle, Tourquel. I've been force feeding her (not easy to do with a turtle) for a little over a week now. She has lost a lot of weight. She is definitely underweight.
But the good news is that she started eating by herself this morning! Very Happy She had shrimps and pellets. Very little but it's a start! I still have one more antibiotics injection to give her on Tuesday (thank god that will be over). I will be bringing her back to see the vet Friday.

She is definitely upset with me. When I get close to the tank, she jumps in the water and gets away from me. She use to swim towards me to see if I had any treats. I guess I can see this reaction as Tourquel getting her strenght back. She'll eventually learn to trust me again.

She still swimming side ways but doesn't seem to bother her. Don't know if that will ever get better. Will have to ask the vet.

But I don't know how to send it. So here we go again. I'm going to have to read the instruction. I'll be back with the photo later. (someday)
