I’m seriously thinking about getting a crested gecko, I’ve been reading the posts on the forum and I’ve ordered a book. (waiting for it to arrive) But one answer I’ve not seen is how noisy are they?

If I get one, I’ll get an Exo Terra glass terrarium for him and it will be in my bedroom, so being nocturnal how much noise can I expect to hear while I’m trying to sleep?

Not at all, they won't vocalise unless in pairs, and you might hear the odd bit of rustling, but you can barely hear it,

Very Happy

That’s good to hear Very Happy

So what sort of vocal noise do they make when in pairs?

Oh, and, just to cover my back, they CAN vocalise when not in a pair, it's just very rare, I've never heard it.

Can't say I've ever heard much at all from my cresteds, heard the odd squeek from the gargoyles when they bite each others tails but that's about it.

Have to admit though, I'm not in the room when it's dark (goes pitch black! so I'd trip over Wink )

Er… I thought Cresties came from New Caledonia? Confused

This might seem a daft question given that they are nocturnal, Smile but Scott you say it’s pitch dark in their room, so I assume they’re OK in pitch darkness, that they can actually see in the pitch dark to jump from branch to branch? Just wondered because it is pitch black in my room at night apart from the alarm clock.

Yep, mine seem fine in total darkness, when I feed them and then go back when the lights are out (and turn the lights on!) I can see them all licking the CGD from their feeding dishes.

My crested room has NO windows, so not even 'moonlight'.

My Cresteds (as with all my Rhacs) are in my bedroom. I have found that they can be quite vocal during the breeding season. It isn't to the extent of a Tokay's call, it's more of a clicking squeaky sound. My male is housed on his own and I have on couple of occasions (over a five year period I should add) heard him vocalise to himself. Gargoyles and leachies are far louder. I haven't heard my chahoua vocalise though.
