Ok, just wondering if anyone can help me out here...
I'm looking for an adult or sub-adult female.
I'm having real trouble finding anything that isn't really small.
I've tried my local aquatics, pet and reptile shops and pollywog.co.uk. Any ideas?
Apologies if this is in the wrong section. please feel free to move it! _________________ http://www.iherp.com/tea

Nope, no luck there either. Just spoke to them and apparently they are really hard to get hold of now (for biological purposes I assume) due to animal rights or something... as far as a supplier is concerned the girl said about the nearest being somewhere in Germany!! I know I can get pet ones over here cuz I bought two not so long ago but nowhere has bigger than 50p sized babies at the mo it would seem :S _________________ http://www.iherp.com/tea

I think your best finding a few babies and growing them on then..they grow REAL fast, I don't soppose theres much else you can do. Theres always big ones (about half grown - 2/3rds grown) up here for £2.50 but thats liverpool for you! Occasionally youll find a couple of monsters here aswell. _________________ x.Jessie.x

That's not a bad idea... but the reason I want a sub-adult female is to pair with my male as he's just lost the female he was living with and he's ready to mate at the moment which is something I was hoping to take advantage of!, Perhaps I'm just going to have to let him go without!!

You may not be able to find them anymore
http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/wca-schedule9/index.htm
Unfortunately, Xenopus laevis is a known carrier of the devastating disease chytridiomycosis.
It is also a potentially invasive sepcies, small populations have survived in the UK for a few years, probably from people buying tiny ones for their community aquarium, and dumping them when they start eating all the other fish. A real pitty for the more responsible herp keepers.
Ive not heard about any update on the above proposal. Anyone have any news? |

Oh dear :S I totally understand why invasive species are a problem, I studied it in enough detail at uni... but I can't deny, this kind of thing really 'wee's' me off. How long will it be before we're not allowed anything at all?! It makes sense though... if people are going to continue being irresponsible and buying animals they know nothing about then releasing them into our environment, what other choice do we have but to limit their availability?
Looks like my little dude is going to be single for quite a while!! _________________ http://www.iherp.com/tea

have you tried shoots in bushey in watford, they sometimes sell them. quite a way to go though. Ameyzoo had some in about 2 weeks ago, young ones. and maidenhead aquatics outlets sometimes sell them _________________ Tom

Tried Maidenhead day before yesterday, the ones in Ameyzoo are waaaayyy too small and no, I haven't tried Bushey but I may give them a call and see what they've got
I think pollywog.co.uk is going to be my best bet. _________________ http://www.iherp.com/tea
