When I was a kid, I used to dream of having a greenhouse/conservatory for breeding my Hyla abore . If I was to one day have one myself, it would be the rain forest type concept with aboreal lizards perhaps or dart frogs. Does anyone here actually do it? If so I`d love to see some pics.
I found this link earlier and it has a step by step diary of just such a project starting in Spring 2004. It`s well worth a look

See what you think, go to "Frog greenhouse". I remember seeing a nice conservatory in one of Scott`s posts on a Chameleon thread that was stunning. Close to me in Swansea is a place called "Plantasia". Hundreds of thousands of pounds have been spent on enviromental technology in a purpose designed huge greenhouse such as automatic misting systems (very big ones too!). The plants are amazing and the tropical area covers about the size of three tennis courts I suppose. But empty of herps! Very frustrating indeed. Imagine what a joy it would be to be put in charge of a place like that. It`s the stuff that dreams are made of. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Yes that looks very much like Plantasia, but WITH animals.
There are some herps at Plantasia, but they are all in vivs in a seperate room. Stuff like bearded dragons, Burmese pythons, King snakes etc. They did have some dart frogs when I last went to frustrate myself.
The viv was far from ideal. It did have a very lavish illuminated colour information point by it with a distribution map, some blurb about the Choco Indians using the poison for their darts (true , but not the species on display) and a species ID photo and scientific name. The photo was the same as the species in the viv, which was Epipedobates tricolor, but the name on the lavish expensive illuminated sign was Dendrobates amazonicus. Tsk tsk! Didn`t even get the genus right. True they have been relatively recently reclassified but not from Dendrobates but Phyllobates so they can`t even use that excuse.
Of course know it all here had to go and tell them, (tee hee hee) and I had to write it on a bit of paper for them. I think they thought that the scruffy bearded Oik in a baseball cap, (yours truly) was taking the mick but I wasn`t.
Anyway, I`m waffling but what I am trying to say is this, that place (Plantasia) is council funded, has AMAZING potential to pull in PLENTY more visitors than it does. Who gets put in charge of these projects?
The vast majority of regulars on this forum could do a much better job I reckon!
(I will go back and take some pics so that you can all share my frustration)

Yeah sounds like with a bit more effort, they could have something truly special.
I think it would be amazing to have a converted greenhouse like that, this is a link to a topic on LF about mixing species but if you go through it there is replys from Arthur Cooke, who has one of these set-ups, no pics mind.

Thanks
I`ve been infuriated by the way such places are run before many a time.
Recently I found out that a tropical butterfly house (to remain nameless) buy in chrysalis in bulk so as to have the free flying butterflies in the greenhouse. So far so good, would be even better if they bred their own.
Guess what they do next though.
Once the emergant butterflies have bred, parasitic wasps are then introduced to predate on the catterpillars so as to keep the greenhouse "Tidy" of catterpillar chewed leaves. It`s a code of practice now followed by more than just the one establishment.
Well I`m sorry but how pathetic! _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD
