Hi,
I know a lot of lizards do carry salmonella as a normal part of their makeup.
I have just had results back from vet on tests for Dave the bosc, as you know I have recently aquired him and did a routine test as I do with all new arrivals.
He is clear of everything except salmonella, having to wait another 2 weeks before I get the type results.

So my question is..
.......Does anyone know what type they usually carry and to what extend does it become a problem.
I have searched the net for any info but drawn a blank, so I am relying on personal experience from keepers on here.
The vet I use is NOT a rep vet but is very willing to treat them by consulting other vets within the group practice.

He has settled in very well, he doesn't like gloves and backs away but is fairly happy when I put hand in to change cricekt feeding bowl and take his mice from forceps. So far he has made no attempt to bite me but I'm not going to give him the chance Very Happy
He is now starting to "fill out" a bit, the sunken tail has started to disappear and he is living up to the reputation of bosc's by eating like a pig.

Thanks for any help you can give.

sorry Tony can't help at all with that one. I know salmonella is present in the guts of most animals but couldn't tell you which type in what animal.

I know some people are concerned by the risk of salmonella in reptiles but following simple common sense hygiene procedures like washing your hands after touching ANY animal can prevent / elminate any risks.

Your bosc is looking good, i'm sure you'll have plenty of fun with him.

Thanks Scott,

Everyone I have spoken to reaches the same conclusion, good hygiene practices and the risks are very low.

There are two types so I'm lead to believe.

There are two species btw, Salmonella enterica and S. bongori. The

latter is the species colonising poikilotherms, and hence causes the

problems when infecting homiotherms like has already been said.

A well kept setup and basic hygiene = no problems.

Thanks again

Tony
