Lovely sets of photos there Peter, funnily enough i saw my first Grass snake, or rather its tail as it disappeared into the under growth, for about 7 or 8 years, a few days ago by my pond Very Happy

Your melanistic lizard is is a mirror of mine and male too, nice find.
The female he was with before and after i caught and kept them had four young about a month/month and a half ago but i decided to let them go after a good fattening up around my pond, i see one or two every now and again Smile

I have seen loads of grass snakes, mostly as a kid but not for many years as i just cant find the time at the moment Rolling Eyes

My pond has only been up and running for a few years at most but i was quite surprized to see it, at first i thought slow worm but only for half a second.
There are also lots of frogs, toads & palmates in it (moved loads from my folks old pond) and 60 - 80 european minnows (these have bred every year so far) so lots of natural food if it should desire.

pond last year, its south facing and gets the sun 90-95% of the day, very warm little sun trap:

and this spring/summer?

Always had a thing for Varanus but vivipera were my first lizards discounting slow worms and they do so well in captivity becoming hand tame and finger feeding etc i've had/bred lots as a kid myself, fascinating. I will release these before autumn and a good fattening see if they hang around, lots of tunnels and hand made hibernaculums built into and under pond lining and well drained higher spots
