Had my first litter off rats on wednesday!
There is a total of 11 and mum is doing well!
Just wondering, if I was to take 1 baby out the nest, would she abandon the rest? |

No, you should be alright - but I have a horrid feeling that the baby rat will not be.... |

Yep, sadly the rat wont be!
I am having to resort to live feeding for two of my royals...ive had them for 5 months now and neither has fed. Ive tried everything. Scenting with frogs/tuna. Night feeding. HOT food. Thawing over night next to cage so they can smell the food gradually. Sadly, nothings worked. Im going to be feeding the first next week. Ill let you know what happens. |

Oh dear, but yes I do understand about sometimes having to feed live in order to kick-start a reluctant feeder. My rats stay together in groups of one male to three / four females. Females seem to breed well for a year or so. If you care for them well they will reward the care with a longer breeding life.
All the best with the Royals.

Young rats should be feeding themselves at 21 days old, and can be seperated from the female. _________________ If you don't know, ask! |

Have you tried assist feeding them yet? This involves grasping the snake at each side of it's jaw, opening it's mouth and pushing a F/T or P/K mouse head first to the back of the snakes throat. Close the snakes mouth(press) onto the prey item and then pull the tail of the prey item a couple of times to make the snakes teeth grip. Put the snake down gently and move away. If you are fortunate, the snake will start to 'walk' the food and gradually eat it. This may not work the first time that it is tried, but persevere - it will!
