Ok, I can't quite seem to get to grips with the heat source required. There seems to be different types and I'm unsure which I need. For example I've been lookin at Exo Terra equipment, amongst others they offer ceramic heat wave emitters of varying wattage, also basking spot lamps of different wattage. Which one do I need, I'm thinking I require the ceramic heat emitter? otherwise how do you keep temp up at night when the lights are off (will I eventually need both) I realise the temp should be lower at night and at this time of year I would imagine it would be ok, however I live in a drafty old flat and it's freezing in winter. Also any advise on which thermostat to use please. Cheers in advance |

wouldn't bother with a ceramic heater, i doubt you'll need it. get a basking bulb, maybe two if its a big viv. also the wattage you need will depend on the size of the viv as higher wattage gives more heat. to give you an idea, the viv my female is in is 4 foot tall and 3 foot wide. i have two 100 watt basking bulbs in there that are on during the day and maintain 26-27 degrees with a basking spot of 32. lights are turned off at night and temp drops to about 16. there is a heat mat in there at the moment but tbh its not really doin anything so wouldn't both with it. you could get one if you're concerned about winter tho. or i'm sure you can get infra-red bulbs for night time which give off heat but let the chams sleep as they can't see that spectra of light. so maybe a low wattage infra-red bulb for winter. but you'd have to make sure it was still gettin cool enough for them to sleep. _________________ Jennifer |

Thank Jen, it will be housed in an Exo Terra 45 x 45 x 60 to start, so would I be about right with 1 x 100 watt, or maybe just a 75 watt would do for now ? What thermostat are you using?

Wow, breww.
I beat you by a day.
I went to see Lee, after reading about him on here, on the Sunday.
I only went to see his shop's set up but ended up putting down one of them pesky deposits.
Lee is going to supply me with everything I need and also set it all up.
Lee is going to keep my Panther for a week so that he can get used to his new home.
Lee really is a very helpful guy and I am glad I went to see him before I just brought the first one I see.
I agree that these next few weeks are going to last forever.
It is only Tuesday now and It feels like a week should have gone passed by now.
Dam, pesky, excitement. _________________ Joey (From Sunny Clacton-on-Sea)

Hi Soph
I've found a 45 x 45 x 60 Exo terra for £55. I wasn't going to bother with one but I've found a canopy for it for £25 on line inc. delivery, that's not much more than buying separate starters, bulb holders, reflectors etc. I wouldn't imagine, and at least it will look neat. Also if I sell it as a when my Cham out grows it, it will assist the sale. All I really need to add will be the bulbs and thermostat, and internal decor obviously. I'm not keen on a mesh viv, I think it would suit a Yemen but not a Panther in my cold flat in winter.
Hi Jo
Didn't reaslise he was open Sundays Else I mite have beaten you to it lol. I agree with what you say about gettin Lee to provide the set up, then house your Cham before you collect, it's a great idea and Ideally I would have done that. However I'm getting towards the tail ends of a messy divorce, so I have solicitors bill's arriving quite often and they are not small Hence money is tight and I need to save on every penny I can
Still would like some advice on which thermostat to get........anybody? |

I am by no means a weathly man. (Lee can confirm this).
I just thought If you get the professional to help out as much as possible you don't end up with an empty Viv and a dead chameleon meal for the snake.
I constantly looked on e-bay and other shops online to get the best prices on things but e-bay isn't really that cheap sometimes and Lee's shop is far better than most of the others.
It just means that as I have never owned a Chameleon before it was best to go with his advise.
I do thing his help confimed the sale on Sunday.
Did you walk around the town? I thought it was nice near the water. _________________ Joey (From Sunny Clacton-on-Sea)

Thermostats to use are a dimming for a light bulb, and a pulse stat for a ceramic.
My website is nearly complete, I just need to get some pics done and put in the right places, and sort out some of the text. Taking pics of the available babies im not looking forward to. They never sit still!
For those of you that want some sound info on panthers have a look at
