Josh. BEFORE you think of getting a ball python you have to understand its needs. Underfloor heating is great in a house but if you were living in the sort of temps a BP needs the the whole family would be in their undewear! Pythons need at least 80 degrees at the COOL end. I run my rack at 92 at the hot end. My whole snake room is at 82 degrees. Its HOT in there!! My house is around 65 degrees. I know lessers and mojos are exiting, as is the whole ball python hobby but its really important to set up your snakes environment correctly and understand your snakes needs BEFORE you buy one. Ball pyhons are pretty and fun. An expensive animal that won't feed because it has a respiratory infection is not. |

Yeh, I've read up on the temps and setup for a while. I do intend to set up the viv and stuff before I get the snake so I can make sure everythings stable. |

you can put a heat mat under a tub, but it has to go inside a wooden viv. i normally tape it down, tape the probe on, put waterproof covering over it and tape that down well, then newspaper, then the substrate, but ALL my royals are in tubs, its the corns, hoggy, boa and ratsnake that are in vivs. and what woodage says is true, i keep the royals room at 80, and the mats at 92. sometimes its hard to stay in that room for more than 10 mins at a time!!! _________________

to be honest I don't know why people say that u have 2 have a heatmat!! I've been keeping royals (and boa's) for the past 15 years and none of my viv's have a heatmat. all teh viv's have a spotlight fot light (obviously) and for the heat. My royals are doing really well and breed as well. at night time the light's go out and still no heatmat, and yet all of them are doing perfectly well. _________________ 1.1 Hypo Salmon Boa (Gee Line)

i would imagine because heatmats are easier. my boa has a ceramic, but out of the two i still prefer mats. they just dont suit the boa. _________________

you need a hot end in the viv of 90-92, with an ambient temp of 80. _________________

a couple of my friends have been using heatmats and a couple of the animals have burns from the mat. I know that it's not put in properly when the snake can burn themselves on the mat's but still. my point is more that it is not absolutely necessary to use a mat! also the temperature is debatable coz I'm not that precise with it like most of you are and still they are all doing really well and breeding, so that's why I don't understand that you would say to someone that starts with his forst animal that the viv has to have a heatmat _________________ 1.1 Hypo Salmon Boa (Gee Line)

the mat should be statted, to keep the heat at right temp. but no matter what you use there is always the possibility of burns. tbh we are making it sound more difficult than it is. yes you must get the correct temps, but its not that hard to acheive. and i have always used heatmats, and never had a burn yet. touch wood(taps her head). _________________
