I've loved snakes ever since I was little and started pressuring my mum and dad to let me get one, my mums OK with it but my Dad refuses to have one in the house, as he says it's just not an animal he wants and doesn't want to walk in my room knowing theres a snake there.

So I was wondering if properly done, could an outhouse sort of idea be turned into a 'Snake House' if you like. I have seen steel/metal structures which I was thinking about insulating, carpetting etc and using that as an outhouse for snakes. My house/garden is pretty big so I could have it sheltered the whole time aswell and it wouldn't be exposed to wind, rain etc.

I was just looking to see if anybodys ever heard or seen of a setup like this or thinks if it could work if it was properly temperature controlled, lit up etc etc.

why cant he just NOT go in your room? i have heard of people doing this, but its not something i would do. the 'hut' would need to be really well insulated, and have electricity running into it. plus i would always be thinking someone was trying to break into it.
but someone else will think differantly from me, so maybe they can give you some constructive advice. i have never done this so i dont really know. good luck anyway whatever you do. Very Happy

Yeh I've tried that one but he says its his house and if he wants to walk in a room he'll do it and doesn't want to be restricted because of a snake. Pretty stupid but meh.

I would definetely make sure it was well insulated and I can get electricity to it very easy as the place I'm planning on placing it is right next to a wall where I know I can drill through with like 8-gang sockets available for everything in the shed to be set up. And the place I've got is really out of the way, its not even visible from the backgarden or the frontgarden, its very hard to explain but my house is built weird and its practically under a level of the house but its still outside. Its kinda like a tunnel I'll maybe take a pic and show you. The only concern is light but it would have probably just enough light at winter/autumn then obviously I'd have lights in the hut aswell which could be left on during the day if it was darker.

Yep, a shed or out building would make a great snake house BUT could be quite expensive to insulate and heat, especially if you only have one snake in there.

I'll try and find some links on this forum, there are quite a few people that have converted sheds to reptile rooms.

I've seen a few decent sheds for around the £200 mark which I think would probably fit a few snakes in there. The cost of electricity for heating isn't much of a problem as I'm still 17 so my mum and dad pay they bills Razz

I've helped out with garage conversions before so I think it could be insulated and carpetted etc pretty easily aswell.

i would never keep a snake in a outhouse in england or europe! a very goor friend of mine had a really big shed with large python's like the tiger and retic's but one day when the weather was really bad, and it was freezing. the shed heather couldn't keep up with that and broke in the middle of the nicht. result? 3 frozen to death retic's 1 rock python near death (it died 2 days later anyway) and a pair of albino tiger pythons that died of pneumonia a week later. try to convince ur mum it's not al that scary. show her pic's from the internet or try to find a snake breeder of reptile shop that will let ur mum touch it and just give her facts about the snake you wanna have! of course it is ur own decision but i hope u'll think it trough

This would be a smaller shed aswell remember so it's not as difficult to heat as a big shed.

actually i remember a post about someone in england who this happened to. and no doubt the hut would be properly insulated too. but they dont hold the heat as well as houses.

if done correctly, it could be just as good as a house. Laughing

BUT there is NO short cuts when insulating etc, as others have already said there are risks with housing this way. Wink
