Just thought I'd have a bit of a rant on this! I have been offered wild caught gravid female ball pythons a couple of times this year and it really makes my blood boil. This sort of thing is no longer acceptable in our hobby. There are enough good clean captive bred ball pythons to go round in our hobby. Tracy Barker of VPI has just said that she will blacklist anyone dealing in them and I agree with her. There ya go, its off my chest!! Very Happy[/i]

I agree, How stressful must it be, to have a belly full of eggs, then be janked
out of your natural environment.
There are thausands of royals in captivity what with CF, CB and still WC adults.
People seem to just want to make a quick buck and try to hit on a new morph !!

Btw Wood, expect there to be a few rants on this thread ! Laughing

I agree totally, especially given that as already said there are plenty of CB animals, but by the same token if there wasn't a market for them in the first place those after a fast buck at the expense of the snakes wouldn't feel it necessary to do it, so at the end of the day who is really to blame, the tribes people in Africa or the Greedy so and so's who buy them Question Having just finished reading Kevin McCurleys book I have to say that the very end of the book where he talks about 'Ball Lords' in Africa was a REAL eye opener!!

I do feel however that there is some call for having wild caught species in a private collection, like Fiji Iguanas for example where there could soon come a time when there aren't any left in the wild, at least it will keep the species from complete extinction, but this definately doesn't apply to Royals!

I agree totally that gravid females should be left in peace!

Also I don't like the idea of CF except when done properly at every stage of the process.

To widen the debate: royals are also collected for food, for skins etc.
If the CFs for the pet trade is stopped more would go to the slaughter house and end up as dinner.
From what I understand the pet trade is one of the reasons ball pythons are thriving in some parts of their natural habitat and an end to the trade that most of us don't like, could be end of the python we love so much in some areas.

food for thought I hope.

100 % spot on Mike

I agree with everyone regarding importing gravid WC , barbaric practise .

I have no problem with , as Mike stated CF . Moral high ground is ok .....long as we dont keep ANY ''pets'' that are/were actually wild caught at some point .

I have always said its about educating ppl . Sadly you wont stop the importing of WC snakes , at least for a good few years ....supply cannot cope with the demand here from domestic breeders . Hopefully that will change with time and good breeding ethics , then at least , with any luck , the UK will have no need to import in huge numbers every year.

Its a complicated subject with many twists and turns .

I have no real ethical problem with wc, so long as it is
a) done properly and humanly
b) not done so as to endanger the wild population.

obviously, importing gravid females does not meet the criteria of a), but if the pet trade gives local people the incentive to preserve populations of animals, and habitat, rather than wipe them out, then it is not necessarily a bad thing. A similar argument can be used in defence of fishing and shooting. Give people an incentive to preserve populations and they will. Dont, and they wont
