not that being a softie is a bad thing, but you have been warned!
background
of my two royals girls who bred last year.. one i got right and she incubated them herself in the nest box..
one i cocked up, took the box out too early as i did not think she was gravid, she laid on the heat mat a few days later..
i sort of saved the eggs.. from 4 one was dead from the off, the one at the bottom right on the mat.. 3 lived for while... 2 of those died off early on, leaving one ok...
about a week before it was due to hatch, something was clearly not right.. smell.. also the feel of the egg.. when they die, i have found the yolk goes solid, and you can "feel" that..
so, being me, had to see, chopped it open..
found this.. dead..
although i had cut if off by these pics... you can see where the baby had got in a knot with the umbilical, yolk stem... it was actually looped round the body, and had restricted the growth in that area..
i doubt this ever stood a chance poor thing, interesting to see though.

also best say, before someone thinks i have morphs i don't
as the embryos grow and develop, the last thing they get is their pigment.
hence this one looks washed out and pastel, its not, its a normal, but as it has died before the last stages of development, has NOT got its full pigment through yet.

certainly interesting photos, what do you think caused this? (I mean the knot).
Purely random egg development defect? External stress from temperature extermes? Movement of the eggs during incubation? any theories?

Very interesting thread, thanks for posting. I've hatched snakes out with kinked/deformed spines...from looking at yours do you think this could have been due to being wrapped in the umbilical cord earlier in development when the bone structure had yet to harden?... _________________ Regards James Stroud |

Yes very interesting and educational. It could be any of the above reasons, don`t think we`ll ever know for sure.
You did the only thing that you could do in the circumstances Nerys, and thanks for sharing and being honest about it. Helps us all to learn.
I think Mr Stroud has touched on a likely reason for the deformity too with the bones being soft at the early stages, PERHAPS the tangle happened when the egg was moved, (as it quite rightly was) and it continued to grow in the restricted position.
Bad luck on this occasion Nerys _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Mmm i have always wondered that too scott...
it got moved a fair bit all in all... when the other eggs died i removed them from this one (although i know you don't need to so much)
and i probably handled it more than any other egg i have had..
i did wonder if picking it up and handling it, holding up to candle and so on, had made the baby wriggle at some point and get stuck
good point about the kinks... not thought about that before, but could well be eh.
