What is the best substrate to provide a gravid female with in her nest box? I was going to use a deep bed of vermiculite and that was it, but others have told me to use sphagnum moss. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I used sphagnum moss in a box last year but she ignored it mostly and layed the eggs between newspaper.
WHne she looks like she is ready to lay, if you use heatmats to heat from underneath turn them down. also keep a wad of moist moss, doing this will stop any eggs possible getting to hot and being damaged untill she ahs finished.

Good tip there mike with the heat mats What sort of size do you use for a nest box, I was thinking LARGE tupperware container, but not sure if they would prefer something a little more snug and round?

Thanks for the tips and the info for the nest box, the knowledge will be put to good use.

I guess it's really just a hit and miss thing then. Even if she doesn't use the nest box, i'm sure that if the eggs are removed and placed in the incubator quick enough it shouldn't make much difference.

I wish I knew when she was going to lay for sure, I'd book the day off work to watch her!
