Hi Everyone

Cut a long story short, I've just been into a local pet shop and yet another owner is trying to make a fast buck from reptiles when they clearly don't have the first clue. They have in their 2 spiny tails iguanas, that's all the info I have, they are priced at £65.00 not sure if that's each or for the 2, anyway, they have no UV at all, a red bulb above the cool end, and only a heat mat to lay on, directly on in fact, oh, there is a rock under the red bulb, but the bulv isn't even a spot bulb. The front door of the shop is wide open and it's freezing in there. Had the owner been there and I'd been sure of my fact I would have had words, but it was just an older woman in there who admitted she knew nothing about reptiles. Mind the furries didn't look too happy either.

What I want to know is roughly how big they get, and if they are agressive etc. I know nothing about Iggys at all, and I've only found a few things out via goodle, but if any one keeps them could they advise me, as I may have to consider trying to brow beating the price down and rescuing them, they were dark gray and looked unhappy, I would say approx 12" nose to tail and hugging the heat mat. I would also assume that they haven't been getting any vits, calcium or veg, there certainly didn't seem to be any sign of any.

Thanks for any advise that can be given. I'll save the post about the royal pythons int he same shop for the proper thread. I may be ending up with half the shop soon Sad

Also, sorry to drone, does anyone know if you have to have a different licence to sell reps in a pet shop and how would I find out if someone has one?

Hi Karen

The tail looks rather like those, and the back feet, but no where near as colourful, mind without UV I probably shouldn't be surprised Sad

I would but Paul has said no, and as I'm not sure which species they are and what their temperament is like and how big they will get, and as I know NOTHING about iggies I'm not sure I'm the best person to have them Sad If I can give the guy info on how to keep them better etc and he's prepared to listen I'd be happy to help, he might find he'll sell them easier as well. I'm worried about the royals he has there as well, I've been told 2 different things about them today. The woman int he shop told me there was 2 int he tank, and friend who were in there on saturday said the guy said they have eggs!! From what I could see of the size of the bit of snake I could see, the female is too small, and she won't feed if she's sitting on eggs, also their have no humidity and they are under a log directly on a heatmat. I'm really worried, apparently he is refusing to put his hand in with them, but I don't know the full facts, and he wasn't about today to talk to. Worse still I think he's a friend of a friend of ours, so not sure whether to offer advice as apparently he know NOTHING about reptiles, or throw a wobbly and threaten him with RSPCA or something, which I am loath to do as they don't like herpers much as it is Sad I'm really upset and don't know what to do for the best, I just don't want the animals to suffer Crying or Very sad

Hi Trese, I haven't got a clue, there is just one of those tacky bright pink stars like you see in pound shop stuck to the front of the glass fish tank which says Spiny Tailed Iguanas. I've tried looking at image in google to see if I can see a visual match, but then without them having any UV at all at the moment, they may be supposed to be bright purple, but they are just grey and sad looking, I think they are a pair though as the one is much thicker set than the other, and they have a line of spines down the back of the neck, which doesn't really mean a lot for an Iguana. I'll see if I can get some more info without causing physical harm to anybody or getting arrested. Although I somehow doubt that the muppet that owns the shop would have the faintest clue!!

They certainly look more like the ones that any images I have seen so far, particularly the suspected female. What would be the care requirements for those, and what sort of size to they get to?

she is fully grown roughly a foot total, sub tropical environment, insects ,we are gonna see if she'll possibly eat veg as the cuvieri do, urm definte uv we use a reptisun 10, sand and soil mix for substrate, little water dish, we have the humidity around 50/60% giving a light spray once a day, temps around 100f under the bask, cool end 80 - 85f

keep in mind that this species is almost definetly gonna be wc as they have not yet been bred in captivity as far as i am aware, there's also not alot of information on these species but here is one, though not hugely detailed
