I palpate only. Ultrasound would be a nice luxury but expensive, I think! I know some of the big US breeders use a portable ultrasound device but I wouldn't know where to get one over here. On BP's I don't think it is really necessary as - so long as the snake is completely relaxed - it's not too difficult to palpate them, especially as they draw near to ovulation and the follicles are fully developed.

The portable ultrasound machines are very, very expensive. your talking about 20k I would think

How do you do it? Is it just a case of running your thumb down the belly? What do they feel like? I've tried with a few females and can feel something sometimes but nothing other times.
Just wondered what method people use...

The best method I was taught is to place your fingers across the female's belly with your thumb running down her spine. Take a starting position approximately 1/3rd of the way down her body. I then encourage the female to enter a tub which ideally should be around chest height. This means that the female's body is hanging down towards the floor. It is important that she is relaxed at this point otherwise you cannot palpate her. Encourage the female to enter the tub and, as she does so, her body will naturally run through your fingers. Press firmly upwards (i.e. with your fingers NOT your thumbs) and you will feel the follicles if they have developed. In the first instance they feel just like frozen peas but, as they mature, they increase significantly in size and become even easier to detect. I hope this makes sense but PM if you want to discuss more.

The follicles are felt BEFORE ovulation. Ovulation is the process whereby a follicle is fertilized and becomes an egg. Hence, once you witness ovulation you can be sure that you will get either (viable) eggs i.e. fertilized follicles or slugs which are unfertilized follicles.
You can, of course, palpate for eggs post ovulation but be sure to apply much less pressure than when palpating for follicles. Ironically it can sometimes be harder to feel eggs even though they are considerably bigger than fully formed follicles.

I did not realise that even though a female ovulates, she can still produce just slugs... so ovulation is not a definite sign of fertile eggs ?  |
