Hi all, had my boa now about 5 mths, so that should put him approx. 7-8 mths old, was just wondering how big they get in their first year as i was told about 5ft, he/she is around 3 1/2 ft now, eating every 9days on a med - large rat. Any opinions welcome |

5ft at a year old is rather large ... I would say too large for a normal Colombian / Common Boa .... I would take the food down a bit to a small rat.
Its a common problem with new boas ...they like to eat and we all like to see our snakes get fed well. With boas you can feed them on smaller food for the first 6 months. I start mine on mice for 6 - 9 mths (depending on the size and growth rate of the snake), then switch to rats. Remember they have 15 plus years of growth left so don't be in a hurry .... in the wild they are opportunistic hunters and they don't get regular meals.

Hi Lynne,
Personally, that sounds fine to me. My guy should really be on small rats now, but he has 2 small weaners every 7 days until I pick up some small rats in a few days. Then it'll be one rat per week.
The weaners ain't leaving a dent at the moment. _________________ "When i'm a big boy I wanna avatar like Johonny. lmao and rofl" |

Basically Lynne, the rule I stick to is one appropriately sized meal every 7 days and by appropriate, I mean about the size of the snakes girth at the widest point. Mine has 2 small weaners now, as these are much smaller than his widest part but he will cut down to 1 small rat once I have some. _________________ "When i'm a big boy I wanna avatar like Johonny. lmao and rofl" |
