i was wondering if the tank is high enough could u have no lid

i would be possible, but there are several things not good about an open tank.
how will keep the animal warm? all the heat will go out from the top. and its better to have a vivarium instead of a tank.
every time you put you're hand in from the top, the animal will get afraid, because you're hand will look like the claw of a big predator-bird
