I tried mine with ecoearth, tried packing it down, but they still got huge mouthfuls of it and started practically choking. is there a good way to avoid this?

Were they hunting crickets?
They can be clumsy feeders.
You could bowl feed.

i use bowls with mine, i find this benificial because A they dont get mouthfulls of substrate and B i can monitor how much they are eating.
plus they know where to go ot get food
