These pics also illustrate another interesting point...do you mate 1 male to 1 female or 1 male to several at a time?
Personally I do groups at this stage and feel for follicles. Once I have identified follicles and particularly growing follicles I isolate individual females and give males 1 on 1 with the female. Once females ovulate they get rehoused in their normal caging and thus the groups thin down as the season progresses anyway.
Anyone else's thoughts on what gets best results would be interesting,

i know of a couple large scale breeders that also set up breeding groups. its an interesting approach. do you find you have better results as far as copulations go??? i would think the male might be a little nervouse with all the action around him.

They seem to find their way. Think the females with follicles 1 on 1 later helps confirm things but some ovulate in the groups and seem to have good fertility. Key to it obviously is to get as many babies from a co-dom male in single season as possible. How many babies viable eggs can you get from a single male to multiple females in one season?

Interesting question, what's the most you have produced Dave? (from one male in one season)
I'm afraid my records weren't great for last season so I can't give any firm figures. _________________

Last season I had 5 clutches containing 29 viable eggs from animals matted to lesser platy male and got 12 lessers and 2 Blue eyed Leucys. I recon you could do better if you had more females dedicated to the project? _________________ For more information on all my herping activities please visit the new website at www.prestigepythons.com |

Some nice snakes you've got there, adn I like your website, especially the care pages, nice to have someone in the know about the place. I guess we'd all better watch what we say about vets bills from now on _________________ www.draco2.co.uk

Trust me I'd be the first to say that some people seem to charge and awful lot for what amounts to basic treatments. _________________ For more information on all my herping activities please visit the new website at www.prestigepythons.com |
