Thanks so much Stuart and everyone for your advice.
I am steering towards the D80 now having read the reviews and some more info on these camera's though I think given the extra cost, I may have to wait to see what bonus I get at work or maybe go for the D40 as cheaper but I so want to get something that will last me.

I am off to Jessops tomorrow to have a feel and have just bought a DSLR guide with a photography magazine so off for some more reading.
Hopefully I will make my mind up this weekend???! ( wait for the money!) and then make my purchase - Hope I can then add some photos on here ( but don't laugh!! Wink ).
Many many thanks!!!!! Very Happy

Cool Your welcome Mandy..I was going to say go out to a shop and actually hold each of the cameras..you'll be amazed how different they can be..one may suit you better than the other..I will say the d40 is tiny whereas although the d80 isn't huge it feels great and has a nice weight to it..feels much better built than its canon counterparts.. For a novice ( like me) I would also highly recommend the Fuji Finepix range, Ive used these for years and got some smashing shots with them.
If you are wanting more then Canon and Nikon certainly seem to be the way to go.

I got one!!!! oops!!! Embarassed I went for a D40 in the end - partly to do with price but I managed to get 3 lenses also including a macro one!!! I have taken some snaps and I am well chuffed and like a kid with a new toy!!!!
Just to say thank you so much for all the advice - it was invaluable and those sites you recommended Stuart were a godsend and led to me asking lots of questions and spending over an hour in the shop while I made them go through the functions and having a go with different lenses etc!!!
I have not uploaded pictures yet as still playing but hold this space!!! ( but not your breath!!)
THANK YOU!!! Wink
From a very well chuffed virgin photographer!!
