Hiya Smile

I have a baby royal, who was fussy to get feeding at first, but now we realise he only likes dark mice/rats. Today he had a small mouse, ate it fine... but my dumeril had just finished shedding and didn't fancy hers, which was a rat fuzzy....so I offered it to the royal (not thinking he would eat it) but he went for it...

My question being, do you think I should have just binned it, or was it ok to give the royal two meals...?

Anna

It is not a good idea to give food that has been refused by one animal to another animal, cross contamination and all that, though I am sure we all do it at some time or another.

I feed young royals as much as they will eat, usually two feeds a week.
I give them food at least the girth of the snake, usually bigger.
Rats are better than mice.

i always put mine onto two before moving them up a size. ie when kya is ready to move up to medium mice,i will feed her two smalls for a few weeks.the corns are ready to move up a size, so they are having two rat pups each meal.
i wouldnt however offer one that had been offered to another first. i bin those ones.

Hi Anna

It's fine to give your royal multiple small items, my young spider took 3 small weaner rats the other night, and he looks good and happy now, where before he was prowling a lot. All my others took 2nd helpings as well, a couple of small items for several feeds, then you could look to move up a size Very Happy

The only thing to be careful of when offering left overs is that if the rat/mouse has been in with another snake there is always the possibility of passing any germs around, and using clean tongs/tweezers for each or disinfecting between snakes. It's nothing to panic about, just a little something to be aware of. Very Happy

Hope that helps Very Happy

That's ok Anna, we all have to learn Very Happy Like I said don't panic about it, as you pointed out it was a first time, and if you hadn't asked you wouldn't have known Very Happy

I'm sure he'll be fine, and no doubt very happy now to have had a little extra dinner Wink

its nothing to worry about. but if it goes in the others mouth and then they spit it out dont offer it. im just extra cautious and bin any that have been in anothers viv or tub.

Thanks guys! The other snake just didn't go for it, I think microchipping and shedding in one week made her grumpy. I will take note and won't do it again Smile Cheese, the royal, looks very pleased with himself though! Making up for lost time!

Lynne will agree with this statement that there is nothing nicer than seeing a well fed happy royal, expecially if it was a problem feeder. And as she said, if it's been in or within spitting distance of anothers mouth or on the floor of a tub/viv, then bin it for safety, or flush it, I do Embarassed Laughing

Incidentally my little Mojave seems to prefer lighter coloured rats, or it may just be coincidence Laughing

hi,

I'm new to the forum and own some royals... including a baby female...

I give mine 2 rats a week but have given her 3 ( on a 1 time period only )

But my adult female wont eat at all regardless of what i give her so i am in the process of taking her temp up to hopefully get her feeding..

But don't be worried if your royal don't eat Smile there a fussy snake in general
