...always the maid ...never the bride 
big camera ( D SLR ) batteries always last longer than compacts ....just carry a set of spares....problem solved ( use rechargeable as well )
its easy ....when yar a guy

I got a Fuji Finepix S9500, and I use rechargables, 4 in the camera and either 4 spare in the camera bag or 4 on charge, takes LOADS of pictures before you need to change batteries. Fantastic results as well, I just point and click basically, as that's about the level of my photography. I've got a tripod as well now, should make things MUCH easier. We went away last Christmas for 3 weeks, and I think in total I took about 2000 photos plus videos, as the camera does that as well, and only used a total I think of either 3 or 4 sets of batteries, I charged them all before I went, saved packing another charger, the airline tend to whinge is you have too much hand luggage
Amazon we're doing a cracking deal on the newer model than mine just before Christmas, and it was about 1/2 the price I paid, but I'm still really happy with it  I can PM you the link if you want Lynne?
