I was thinking to put some plants in with my crestie, i was wondering what ones are easily cared for, and what would be suitable for the crestie itself Smile also would they need a uvb light ? or is it not necessary ?

ty !

I don't keep Cresties but i do keep Day Geckos. I use Devils Ivy otherwise known as pothos plants in my vivaria. They are really easy to grow. Depending on your enclosure location, you may need additional light.

Hope this helps.

Bromeliads
Ferns
Orchids
Gesneriads
etc
etc

all do well in vivariums.. For lighting either go with a T5 arcadia bulb (easily available) or a growlux bulb you want around 1500 lumens the more the better.

There's a article in next months reptile care magazine about naturalistic topical vivariums it's focused on the dart frog vivarium but the principles are the same for any tropical vivaria so just ignore the humidity needs of the frogs and you're set Cool

devils ivy is stupidly easy to grow in vivs, it even grows in plastic tubs that arent 100% clear and they have no additional light

Ficus pumila are doing it very well in vivariums. And also Scindapsus are growing very fast.

Just to say...Scindapsis is the same as pothos, is the same as devils ivy. Yes it is very easy to grow, and take cuttings from to increase the number of plants you have. Easy to get hold of too from garden centres, florists etc.

Idiot question from me Embarassed I want to convert mine after Christmas, but I need to know what I need to put in the bottom, I want to eventually try and get Millipedes/centipedes (I'll look that up again in my book) in there as well and create a natural eco system that will self clean as much as you can with cresties Laughing What do I need to do? I've got exoterra daylight bulbs in my hood 2 of them one on either side, I just need to know what needs to go in the bottom and at what depth.

Also can I use that lucky bamboo that you can get in garden centres as it would make a nice sturdy climbing frame for them. I know MJ is an expert on all this Wink

Thanks, Claire

No need for millipedes and you don't want centipedes in there for sure Wink

couple inches drainage (Leca, hydroton or hydroleca)
Weed block fabric
then a planting mix

then plants

For clean up crew you can use tropical white wood lice and springtails.. these coupled with the live plants will break down any waste created.

Thanks Paul, that's really helpful, I would never have thought of the creepie crawlies Very Happy

I hope the weedblock fabric works better in the terrarium than it did in my front garden Very Happy

Whats a good planting mix? Are we talking John Innes, Vermiculite and orchid bark?

Thanks for the help next cleaning out session they have in the new year, as I've just done it today, they will be converted to naturalistic environment.

Where do I get the cleanup crew from? Very Happy

1 part peat moss
1 part ecoearth or similar
