Hi,
I'm looking to get something new and figured this would be a good place for ideas. I've previously had Iguana's and have a Corn Snake. Just now I'm thinking of getting one of : Veiled Chameleon, Royal Python or Bearded Dragon.
I've heard the Veiled Dragon may not be a good idea for a novice like myself, so if anyone can recommend a good starter pet other than those mentioned I'd be very grateful! I'm looking for something that can be handled and are a bit of fun.
Cheers,
Craig |

hiya and welcome to the forum. royals are good but really shouldnt be handled too much, not as much as corns anyway. what about a gecko? or a hoggy. or a rosy boa. there are hundreds. the beardies are good too. _________________

Wow, didn't expect such a swift reply!!
I'm looking for something that doesn't require too big a cage as space is hard to come by in my flat! A 4' vivarium is probably the max I could manage.
I'll look into your recommendations. Cheers. |

male hoggies and rosy boas only grow to around two-two and a half feet. so they dont need big vivs. however beardies can end up needing large vivs. a gecko would be good if you wanted a lizard, but i would go for a hoggnose or a rosy boa if you dont have much space. _________________

I've read that a 4' vivarium should be enough to house 2 adult Bearded Dragons (obviously as a minimum). Lack of space is just a current problem, so if I need more we'll see when the time comes. I've heard stories about people taking them out and them sleeping on their chest. I like the idea of that!
I'm not overly taken with the Rosy Boa's or Hognoses you mentioned. Personal preference really. The idea was much appreciated though.
If I was to get another snake I'd want something a bit bigger than my current Corn Snake. That's half the reason I wanted a Royal Python. They've always been my favourite snake, and they look great.
Hmm, it looks like I've already made my mind up there, but I'm still open to suggestions. |

royals wont grow as long as corns can maybe, but they grow 'thicker'. the corns will be long but thinner, if you get my meaning. what about one of the beauty ratsnakes? kingsnake? think you really want a beardie though!!!! _________________

I am kind of leaning towards a Beardie just now. That or the Royal. I figure a Beardie may be a good starter lizard, giving me a bit more experience to maybe get something more exotic in the future.
Yeah, I meant thickness instead of length there, sorry! |
