|
|
I will soon be building a large outdoor building (approx 3mx6mx2.8m) that will house my snakes. I was just wondering how people heat there reptile rooms and vivs inside of them. There will be approximately 30 vivs ranging in size as well as various other hatchling racks etc. My ideal would be to have each viv, with its own heat source, thermostatically controlled but due to the high expense of all the stats this may not really be a viable option.
Cheers

just an idea but maybe put under floor heating in?if the walls and roof are well insulated it may be worth a shot. cheaper to run that alot of the other heaters (oil filled,fan etc) and can still be thermostatically controlled. _________________ keeping male arg blk and white tegu,male royal python,pure surinam red tail boa,giant african bullfrog,common snapping turtle |

If you can, add under floor heating. Either via an extension to your home system or an electric version.
I think it's vital for a large reptile room that's not part of the house. _________________

I had an out side shed set up for my inverts years ago, its ok but we had loads of power-cuts at the time so i bought a generator for emergencys. _________________ http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Bird-fly/

Cheers guys. I am considering UFH, but this will only give me a background temp in the building. I was more interested in how everyone heats their vivaria when they have such a large collection. Guess im trying to find a clever way of saving some pennies

If the room is mainly for basking lizards, then switch your day and night over.
I did this with my last reptile room and it worked out a treat.
Lights came on around 5pm and off again 5am the next morning, the advantages were;
1 ) Cheap night time electricity rate in use when the bulk of the heat is needed (basking lights)
2 ) Warmer daytime temps meant that their 'night time' temps were warm enough to have NO additional heating
3 ) It meant that the hours I was actually at home, the animals would be active (ie get home from work at 5pm, I could spend all night working in the room without the lights going off). _________________

That's really interesting Scott, I was wondering about switching their cycles over - great to hear someone else has done it before.
I have a rep shed which is insulated well but I am struggling with heating more this winter - I've sold most of my animals, only a few left. and it's surprising how much warmth you actually get from the actual vivs themself. With with not many left there has been a big temp drop.
Background heating I use a couple oil filled rads. _________________ www.ratsnakefoundation.org |
