If you choose a 3ft viv, i'd put a bulb in there with a guard to increase ambient temperatures. I believe if the ambient temperatures are too low, the snakes can develope an RI from this. So ideally you should look for 78-80F in the cool end, and 80-85F in the warm end. With a basking spot of about 88-92F. Also too much humidity can cause an RI, so generally we just leave them alone with no spraying, although, i know during shedding it can be helpful. Humidity should be about 40-60%. What we usually do, if there's a problem shed, is let them soak in a tub of water, filled to about 1/4-1/2 of their girth, put an upside down water bowl in for them to rest their head somewhere (if they choose), and we leave them in overnight. The skin falls off entirely. What we notice though, is if the snakes are feeding regularly enough, they shed without much problem. I'd say their humidity requirements are moderate... too much can be as harmful as too little... to be honest we hardly ever check on our humidity levels, and have done for 7 years of owning them. I do the odd check, but from reading VPI's book, they tend not to bother either.. because where ever you measure the humidity it will read something different elsewhere (i.e. where they hide is likely more humid than a measurement under a light bulb, stuck to the side of a viv etc) |

Thanks everyone. We'll be setting everything up a few days before we get her, so that the temp will be correct. I don't want to leave anything to chance. _________________ )O( Freyja. /|\

Hi there.
If you already have the big vivarium in place, you could always pop out to Staples or Argos and buy a small 'really useful box' to put you Royal in until it gets bigger. Probably a 9 or 10 litre one will be fine until it gets to about 700g. Then you could use a 50 litre one, still in the vivarium until it gets to adult size. Then you can change to the vivarium. The tubs are about a Tenner.
That way, you can pop the thermostat probe on top of your heat mat, put the tub on top the heatmat coving about 1/3rd of the floor space, set your thermostat, so the temp inside the warm end hide in your tub reaches about 95f. It'll take some tweaking, but once there, it'll be fine. that's all you will need.
If it is very cold in the cool end, simply move the tub up the heat mat, so that more heat gets to the cool end. as long as the snake can escape the heat if it wants to.
A cold cool end isn't a disaster, as long as the temp in the warm end hide is in the 90f's to assist in digestion. In fact, as a wise medusan once told me, the greater the gradiant the better. He also says, 'think of it (The Royal) as a car. When your car gets low on fuel, you go and fill it up. Once full, you go and drive it around and it gets low again, so you have to fill up again. Its the same with snakes. They fill up with heat and then go and cool off. When they get cool, they pop to the garage to refuel.'
IMO of course. Hope this helps. _________________ "When i'm a big boy I wanna avatar like Johonny. lmao and rofl" |
