It seems that 86 F is the exact spot in a thermal gradient up (or down) through the nestbox where the female will choose to lay, so the deeper that is (assuming the box can be heated from beneath), the better.

The actual hormonal triggers for egg-laying in reptiles are little-studied, but are probably similar to mammals in that a final step involves activating oxytocin receptors in the uterine musculature. Human mothers-to-be are often advised to talk a long walk, climb stairs, etc., to facilitate the onset of labor -- in this instance both elevated metabolic activity and physical compression of the uterus by the fetus (or eggs) are claimed to be involved. A sustained heavy bout of digging would do the same things for a monitor.

females are both putting on considerable weight - the smaller is digging like fury and I am expecting eggs with the week.

Very interesting post, and great to see someone breeding monitors over there,
The larger monitors I have seen here laying eggs do dig allot before laying (salvadori, cummingi, salvator etc),
Thats an interesting theory on the egg laying preparations and labor.

Good luck with the eggs, lets hope she lays a nice fertile clucth for you!
