Hi, been researching monitors online & would really like one, been looking at the savannah's, so basically any advice would be great, have read up on their characteristics, heating, dietary control, habitats etc. but still i do value personal opinions off people that own them, also r they alright as a starter or should i try something smaller ?

I think that Savannah's are not great for new herpers.I think a smaller reptile as your first is always a good place to start. Because there is less chance you can miss problems with your reptile or its habitat. e.g rotting old food, water leak, parasites on animal etc. After a while of keeping i would then consider keeping monitors. They require alot more time than a smaller lizard such as a beardie or leopard gecko.

That's just what i think neway. Smile

If a sav is what you really want then take a sav. I don't see the need of taking an animal you don't really want in order to be prepared for a monitor. Savs aren't that difficult. Off course they are bigger then most of the common reptiles, but if that isn't a problem and you can give him a nice roomy cage and understand what savs need then just go for it if that is what you want.

Get yourself an Ackie or a Storrs, easy to keep, dont cost to much to feed and wont stink the house out.

if you have snakes you are not really a beginner
there is no point getting an animal you don't want
i always think with the info you can get with the help of the net, aswell as being able to get advise of ppl actually keeping them, there is no reason why you shouldn't be well prepared to keep a sav
only thing about them is they get big and eat a lot
mice are not really a good diet for them so it can get rather expensive buying all those locusts and other invertabraes.

if you can afford it go, do your homework, and buy one when u r ready
