should i buy the standard lens kit and get the tamron 55-200 macro or go body only and get the Canon EF 75-300mm f4/5.6 USM or perhaps even Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG , it will be my first dslr and i want an all round lens with good macro capabilities, as said before you get what you pay for, however its going to take me years to get used to anyway. any input would be great!
cheers

Ryan

Confused I would buy the body only if I were you..the kit lenses are usually cra.p to be honest..and don't be fooled by the zooms which also have "macro" on the label at best they just focus a tiny bit closer than a normal lens..a true macro lens is what you need if you want proper close ups..

Thing is with an "all rounder" you will compromise in many areas...what will be your main use?..will you need a long zoom or will a medium telephoto do,maybe something in the 17-80mm range as there are quite a few in this range that are well priced and good performers..none will give you true macro but will enable you to get quite close...

I dont really need macro for the moment, my main interest is taking pictures of my panther chameleons, my mother has a very succesfull Bulldog kennel so i will be taking lots of pictures of them and also i am going on safari in kenya so i want something up to all them jobs i guess, by the way thanks for your help Stuart, anyone else would say ask the people in jessops, but the lady didnt know what a 400d is Shocked

Your welcome mate..sadly there isnt a do all lens but for the chams I would maybe consider a third party mid range zoom..either the tamron 28-75mm 2.8 or sigma equivalnet would be good..and the safari lens would need to be something in the region of 300mm so unless you want to spend more money the one you mentioned may suffice..
BUT I would get a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 as this would be great for the chams and the dog portraits..the 1.8 can be had for around £80 and will outclass all the other lenses we have talked about.. Wink

i dint think they stock a 50mm at jessops but i will definitely go for one if they do, £80 is a small price to pay for a lens that can be used for so many things, so if i went in there and had to get a lens for the above things, bearing in mind i can always get the 50mm another time, what would be my best buy, thank you so much for your advice, just dont want to end up wasting money on a lens i dont need.
cheers
