temps are (in faranheit) 88 ontop of substrate, as soon as i uncover the heat mat and take a reading it is 100 and once its been uncovered a minute it reads 93.

the quote above is my situation. so i should drop the temp and have it so its 92 when uncovered yeah? that'll mean the temp on substrate will drop to about 80!

im so confused. its trying finding a happy medium

You're snake should get the benefit of 90-92 degrees so that it can digest its food and produce sperm/follicles depending on sex. Therefore the temp on top of substrate should be 90-92 on the hot end with the temp on the cool end no lower than about 75. It doesn't matter what the temp is on top of the heat mat as long as the temp in the tub/viv at the hot end is 92ish. Remember it is very important to have a cool end also so that the snake can thermoregulate itself.

Feel free to mail me ncameron@recessivepythons.co.uk if you want to discuss this further.
