well as title lol.

i was just wondering as i have always kept my cresties, just at room temp with a uv light tube. but i have some spare heater pads.

You don't need to. As far as I'm aware (read this in many places), they don't absorb their heat through their underside so a heatmat wouldn't have any affect should you put one in. That's what I've read on quite a few caresheets.

Some people do, some people don't. Personally I don't, and the only time I didn't have success was when I left them with someone when I went on holiday and they weren't kept moist by him.

All I did for mine was mix some perlite and vermiculite along with some water to keep it moist (Only enough so that it stays in a ball when squeezed but doesn't drip) and put it in an empty ice cream tub, using my thumb to create a small hole for the eggs to go in. I then opened the lid every couple of days to increase air flow and sprayed a little bit to keep the substrate moist. I also kept a thermometre on top of the tub to see what the temperature was like (It was always between 70 & 80 degrees farenheit. And as I say, of 3 clutches, I've had 2 hatch like that, the failure being when I went away on holiday.

If you have some spare just put a heat strip at the bottom and the hot air will raise and give a gradual heat.
I think that most reptiles should be able to thermoregulate.

We heat our Crestie vics with overhead IR bulbs to heat the top of the vivs (Exo Terra 60x45x45's). We did it this way because Crestie's are used to getting their heat in the air around them and not from a warm subtrate. Whether you need to heat the viv or not will also depend on how warm the room is year round and if the room is being heated. If the room is heated and is on a thermostat to regulate the temperature (around 76f) then no heating would be needed for their viv, though the room temperature would have to be manipulated to induce breeding in the spring. We have our IR bulbs on habistat dimming stats to regulate the temperature at the top of the viv to around 76f, obviously the temp drops lower further down the viv. The IR bulbs also allow us to watch the Crestie's in the dark which is an added bonus. In the spring we can adjust the stats to give a higher temp to induce breeding and then turn them down again in winter. Wink
