No, without WC there would be no CB, I think that once you have a few different strong bloodlines that are CB then there should no longer be the import/export of WC but until then no I don't think it should be banned.

Do you think its wrong to keep snakes then?

I don't mind WC snakes depending on:
a) What the current wild status is
b) If it is beneficial for the local economy - afterall, at least the forest has a value, and won't just be burnt for agriculture - permanently destroying a part of the population
c) If it is used to expand captive bloodlines
d) How it is treated

There is a huge difference between using wild stock, as a last resort, to save a species or even to strengthen CB genes in the name of science ...

... and raping the shrinking wild population whether for profit and personal gain or just to keep a previously wild animal captive under restricted conditions !

Capturing, caging and selling so-called 'WC' specimens, to all and sundry for profit, will only ever serve to ensure even more 'WC' specimens are taken from their natural habit ... it should never be condoned imgo ... !!!

It should be totally outlawed ... or if the powers that be truly believe it is absolutely necessary, at the very, very least it must be stringently controlled and diligently policed.

That's my personal view ...

I'm with the others - if there were no WC, we'd not have any cb stuff to keep...

New species only become available because of people carefully working with and breeding wc snakes.
Next problem then, is one person breeds them, so ALL cb babies are related - then you get to inbreeding if you want to keep the species going as cb. So you introduce a few new bloodlines from wc animals...

WC are needed to keep the hobby alive - species should be picked with care and treated incredibly respectfully to make sure that is was 'worth' catching them for the hobby. Mememe makes some very good points.

There's NOTHING wrong with wild caught snakes, it's uneducated retailers that end up with them that's the problem.

Obviously the blame should really be on the wholesalers who palm off wild caught snakes to shops they know aren't knowledgeable enough to look after them.

There are a few species that should not be imported in large numbers and certainly should only go to specialist shops rather than you typical 'garden center retailer'.

i would have thought there are enough breeders breeding in this country now to stop having to import wc.

Again I'm with the others, I see no probs with wc but with certain conditions.

Also it's not just the reptile keepers that are taking snakes out of their habitat, thousands are taken for food, medicine etc.

And even that is a very small amount of snakes compared to the amount destroyed from habitat destruction.
