|
|
Just picked up a couple of African Train Millipedes for my son, but they are covered in little brown/black mites. The older ones are very fast, and the whitish babies are slower, and crammed into every creviss.
I know they dont actualy do any real harm to the milli`s, its just my son`s dont want to handle them now. The book says to gently push them off with a soft paintbrush!!!!! (They are covered!)
I know I cant use any pestacides, so has anyone got any suggestions??!! _________________ 1.1.7 Bearded Dragons

They often arrive covered in wee mites, as Penfold said the mites have a symbiotic relationship with the pede.
Just to be awkward though, I have six gigas and they were highly unusual in as much as they had no mites on them whatsoever when they were delivered. Had them over two years now and they are still going strong.
I know some species of pede also have internal parasites that they actually require to survive. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Some mites are beneficial to milli's the little white ones are great, but if you have different ones try getting some of the predatory mites I can't remember the name of them at the minute though sorry.

Oh, sounds like I need to read up specific info on pede mites!
Its so off putting to see them, the larger ones are pretty fast, and dark in colour, while the babies are tiny and a whitish colour, they seem to stay close to the leg areas.
Im sure if I encourage my son to use gloves to handle them, I could stop being so paranoid of my Beardies and Skink catching them! I will make 100% sure nothing contaminated will pass from tank to tank. Does anyone know how long a mite can stay alive on average, without a host animal to feed from!

Oh, Im getting it now! My mate had a problem with snake mites on his pet-shop bought Beardie, they were difficult to remove, as they had buried their mouthparts in. (They cleared them all up quickly, after speaking to a vet, and using what he described).
Guess the moving mites are feeding on dead skin cells, instead of blood then?
Am I getting it now?! _________________ 1.1.7 Bearded Dragons

I am beginning to get concerned by the number of mites on my millipedes at the moment, they seem to have thousands.
Looking into options to remove them at the moment! |
