could you put some crate paper or similar over the flash to tone down the light if you can?

Unfortunately those ring lights are for DSLR/SLR or traditional sticky out lens cameras. There was one I couldn't find again that had variable intensity, choose which side was lit and a frosted diffuser for it to that seemed fairly reasonable, by comparisson with the Nikon/Canon branded ones.
