Hi all

I know I'm not as regular a user as I'd like to be on the forum but I hope you don't mind me sharing some pics and info about my first ever baby crested gecko, as I am rather excited this evening to say the least! Wink

The egg which has produced this baby was only laid on July 13th, meaning that it has taken just 51 days to hatch. Is this unusual or just on the low side of the 'normal' range of incubation duration? The eggs are being incubated at a constant 79-80F. I only ask if unusual as the books seem to suggest that 55 days would be considered short, and this is obviously 4 days earlier even than this - have others of you had similar experiences?

Either way I am absolutely delighted with the new arrival and hopefully s/he will be the first of many, I am incubating several other eggs at present and hope this number will continue to rise. We all have to start somewhere don't we? Rolling Eyes Wink

The parent animals are pictured (with the male on the right) beneath the pictures of the newest addition to the family... Rolling Eyes

Hope you like! Very Happy

Jonathan

Very nice hatchling there, your female is stunning! I have a female just like your male too.
As for the early hatching I think the "normal" range is 60-90 days and so yours wasn't too far off. I would put it down to the constant temperature being a little higher than the normal room temperature but your hatchling looks fine and so I wouldn't worry too much. Cool

He's a very nice looking little fella. He seems to be fine not like some of the 'premature' babies you see who have almost translucent skin.

I think he hatched early as your temperatures for incubating the eggs were pretty high. Most people recommend between 72-74 to incubate them, tho this isn't always possible when we have a hot summer.

Mine generally hatch out around the 80 days mark though in the middle of the summer I had a few hatch at 69 days and I've also had them go 95 days before.

Nice hatchling but that female is stunning.

As the others have mentioned, the shorter incubation length is due to the fairly high temp.
Unlike many exotic eggs, crested geckos can be incubated at room temp.
so no need for an incubater.
S/he looks healthy enough! Some people [myself included] feel it is best to
incubate at a slightly lower temp as the incubation period is longer and the
babies tend to be stronger and bigger.
It is not proven that temperature during incubation has anything to do with
the sex of the gecko but again many people do believe that the lower the temp
the more likely the gecko will be female....

*I have not bred cresties yet but do intend to so this is not personal experience*

When I bred Cresteds, which was a couple of years ago now, I had my incubator set at 78oF - 82oF (this was because we only had two incubators at the time so different species had to share). The temperatures did fluctuate a degree or two. The shortest incubation time I recorded was 44 days at that temperature. I was shocked as my average was around 56 days. Both of the babies were fine and healthy, though they were both males. I never found any problems with the health or size of the babies when incubating at the higher end of the spectrum.

My reason for using an incubator is that I tried incubating at room temperature but was never successful. I tried using different incubation mediums, different rooms in the house, different heights in the room. The results were all the same; the eggs died and went mouldy. On the other hand I know of others who have tried incubating at room temperature and have been very successful.
