this little trick that pet shops seem to be using more and more these days. A snake is labelled as captive bred, but then when you probe them as to the breeder, hatch date, number of feeds etc etc they tell you it was "captive bred in Indonesia" (replace Indonesia with whatever country the species in question naturally comes from). What's this all about?!?!

To my mind that's just labelling a captive farmed animal as captive bred. Netting off an area of forest so that you have snakes in "captivity" and them letting them breed in that "captivity" is not what I call captive bred. They're still being exposed to natural parasites, more likely to be eating parasited foods and drinking contaminated water...

thoughts anyone?

Stuart

hi Stuart,

Yep certainly true in many cases, CF is far better term.

I know there's a few proper breeding centers set up for commercial reptile breeding, including ones in Indonesia. I think they are a vital tool in the hobby and shouldn't be regarded as a bad thing but totally agree that the resulting offspring should be clearly labelled once they reach the retailer.

If the shop say CB in Indonesia they should still be able to supply you with the breeders details with hatch dates etc.

I understand peoples perception of "reptile farms", because of images of south american iguana farms and ball python farms in africa.

I currently work in a breeding facility on Bali(Indonesia), the animal quality etc will be no different to that of animals bred in the UK or USA,

I would say places such as NERD, Bob Clark, VPI, Macks etc have exactly the same types of facility.

We have invested allot of money in heating, caging etc. A few of our pens are outside (such as tegus), but also if you look at bert langerwerfs facility in the USA his pens are also the same we are just using natural sunlight and temperatures.

The government in Indonesia are very restrictive with breeding reptiles, many species we breed have to be bred to F2 here before we are allowed to sell them outside of indonesia (even corn snakes.....)

If just having a large breeding facility makes it a "farm" i.e CF, then surely this term should be applied to all the large american and european
breeders of animals also?

With regards to food and water for our animals, we have a high tech RO filtration unit for out water supply, and breed all of our own food from crickets, mealworms, mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits etc...Our rodents have their own air conditioned room to keep the productivity up all year round,

Certainly an interesting topic.
