Unfortunately, I see it from the other direction - rather than 'why not allow perenties' I see it as 'why allow salties and freshies'? Particularly salties - how many private keepers have the facilities to house a full grown saltie (given that they'd have to be housed indoors in Victoria)? |

A number of people have their names down for hatchlings this year, so these will all be shipped around Australia after they've had a few weeks of feeding. |

Crocdoc i know of 2 salties kept here in Vic in outdoor enclosures one is coming up to 12' the other 10'. Both in excellent enclosures the 12 footer would be in a 20mx15m pit with heated hot box and through winter the pond is also heated the other 1 was kept in a smaller pit but has now moved to a reptile exhibit on the coast.Where i live in Vic our council has a 1.6m lenght limit on crocs that are kept in captivity.
Ive wanted to get a freshie for a while but cant because of that regulation.
The amount of freshies that are kept here is unbelievable people that have a class A licence can just grab 1 no experience needed and there is at least 6 for sale here now that i know of and 4 of them im guessing are because there scared of them.
That being said id still ove to have a perentie.

Unfortunately, for every story of a big crocodile kept well there will be a dozen stories of ones kept poorly. I can think of examples of that I've seen.
As for the 1.6m limit, what happens to the animal after they exceed that? Back up north to the croc farms to be made into boots and handbags, because for every story of a croc being handed over to a zoo or fauna park when they get too big there are dozens turned away because zoos and fauna parks usually have all of the crocodilians they want or need. As long as people don't mind putting time and care into an animal they know is going to be destroyed. The crocs are usually captive bred on leather farms, anyway (salties, that is). I personally wouldn't want to do that, but I don't hold that against others as long as the animal isn't suffering at any point.
Perenties would be a great animal to keep, no doubt about it, but the space requirement is enormous. Maybe herpers should band together and lobby the Victorian government to allow larger reptiles to be kept under a system in which the premises/intended housing is inspected. They do it for public institutions - where I work all of our enclosures have to meet stringent minimum size guidelines. |
