in a 36 inch viv I have heard so many reports about what substrate to use it is very confusing...

At the zoo where I work they say avoid using sand for young ones and go with something like gravel..

others say to use paper towels

and more say simply use sand

I know about impaction and such and that this is apparently more likely with fine sand where young ones are concerned, but also people here have said that fine sand does not cause impaction..

what is correct as I am setting up my viv this week :s

What are you going to be putting in it?
I would say for any young lizard use paper towel or nothing.
When older you can stick with the paper towel/nothing or move onto sand etc.

You can use any substrate you want if you feed in a tub etc outside the viv.

I keep my leo hatchlings on nothing until they are 6 months.

Gravel is a stupid idea, the next time you see the person that suggested that, shoot them Very Happy

Impaction is really not an issue if you provide a small bottle cap of pure calcium in the viv, and dust the prey items at feeding time.
