I am JohnC on various forums, principally Livefood UK.
I must be the only o.a.p. to be keeping reptiles, it is an interest of mine that goes back over 32 years. Now that I am retired, I have more time for them.
Reptiles I keep, and breed now or later, include corns, leos, beardies, cresties, ackies, royals and milks.
I don't often have questions to ask but will contribute with help where I can.
You will find that I never swear or get bad tempered, not on forums anyway.

I can't think of anything really. Most of todays range in the shops was available if you looked for it, but it was all wild caught and mainly adult.
The only hatchling that I ever saw was a burmese python, which I bought.
There was a bit of captive breeding, including by me with American rat snakes.

There were always a range of colubrid snakes from Asia such as Paradise (Flying) Snakes and the Long Nosed Tree Snake. These were very cheap as they were imported for next to nothing, but most did not live long. American colubrids were dearer but of better quality.
Caimens were freely available and a fair few sold. Large monitors were more common then, quite cheap too. Turtles were quite popular and available if you knew where to look.
I don't remember seeing much Australian stuff, there were no beardies or carpet pythons. I think exports from there were banned a long time ago.

Far and away the most popular snake was the Red-sided Garter. Many other garter species could also be found, I had at least five.

It was normal practice then to keep lots of different species in the same viv. I had my burmese in with three rat snakes, a common boa, and a big sheltopusic. They all lived quite happily together. There was a tubular heater (caged in) controlled by a fish-tank thermostat. Suggest it on a forum now and wait for the flack!!!

I can't escape,help !!!

Seriously,Tanya, I am not being disloyal to your great forum, I joined here to discuss a wider range of reptiles. Also, I find that most of the time I am on the same wavelength as Scott, as I am with you.

Of course, nowadays your horizons are widening, python, boiga, what next ! No-one has a greater thirst for herp knowledge than youself.

I'm pleased to find you here.

Gosh, Angi, Tanya had me feeling like a naughty schoolboy !!
Wherever I look she is a forum member, I had better not contradict myself or I will feel the back of her hand !!
If only all teachers had her thirst for knowledge and her way of freely passing it on.
Tanya, you are an angel really.
