Hello again all . As you may or may not know, I am in the process of building a vivarium to host 1 male Gecko & 2 female Gecko's. I have put together a state of the art, extremely detailed and carefully planned diagram of the Viv to show the size and lighting/heat I am thinking about using.
Please take a look...
I have been told a heat mat AND a ceramic heat bulb is unnecessary. But due to the size of my Viv (4x2x2) and considering how COLD my attic bedroom gets at night and in the winter, I doubt that a heat mat alone would generate enough heat to keep the Viv at a suitable temperature.
Also, as you can see, I want a normal red bulb at the right side of the cage. This is only to be used at night time in periods of darkness when I want to monitor the geckos nocturnal behavior as I have been told that they're eyes cannot detect red light?
Feel free to post any suggestions, constructive criticism or any ideas that you think would make my vivarium a better place to live for my geckos!
Thanks, Manny
(Sorry about the repost but the vivarium design forum is more dead then the Dodo's!!)

One thing to consider, air temp is 0% relevant to leopard geckos. The only part of the viv that needs to be warm is 40 - 50% of the ground on one side. Especially the ground inside a hide.
They like to absorb heat through their bellies.
My leo's have no heating at night and a spot bulb heating the warm side ground during the day. (I used to use heatmats but find bulbs easier to replace) _________________ Kind Regards,

It looks good, but I agree that air tempreture is 0% revelent to the gecko as they absorb heat through their bellies mostly for digestion.
