i have got a 300d, and want to set it up so it will give me good macro shots without a macro lens. cant figure out how to get the settings correct and wondered if there were any specific guides on this.
it has a 18-55 lens. |

I have the exact same set up , the 18 - 55 is , to be blunt , a REALLY crap lens , it hunts everywhere , slow as an elephant in the Darby as well ...
agree with the f1.8 ( i have it ) 50mm
or better still get another lens with Macro ( I use 25-105mmUSM , ok its dear better geees WHAT a lens )
other option would be a Tamron 90mm ( EF mount ) _________________ 3.7.0 Royals

The 50mm is a great lens but its nowhere near a macro..in terms of focusing distance..you could reverse it or use an extension tube though, seen some good results like this. _________________

good point made , completely forgot about Tubes , your local Jessop ( spit cough ahem ) will have a set of three, not that dear either.... BUT a extension tube/ ring on THAT lens .....been there tried that...chocolate T pot !
on board flash gets shadowed at top ( due to extra length ) , lens shows as soft a lot of time as well I found ....sorry but the stock lens on the 300D is just not able to cut it ( and that said from a Canon lover !! , oooh the pain of it , the humility !! )
add the tube/s to the f1.8 50mm ...now ya talking pin point sharp...yar eyes bleed when ya look at the result ! _________________ 3.7.0 Royals

Yep an external flash is much better if you can get one..although I've had good results using the on board flash with my tamron 90mm _________________

I love mine..can be used with a diffuser as well or bounced as you say..not as harsh as the on board speedlights. _________________

scrap fleabay and get here http://www.apertureuk.com/New-Can.htm
All macros are good..the tamron 90mm is highly regarded as is the sigma 105mm..sigma also do a 70mm and a 50mm but I would stick for the longer working lengths..the sigma 150mm is also very nice..or go for the canon 100mm a cracking lens. _________________
