|
|
Hi all I was hoping someone could shed a bit of light on my problem.
Yesterday I noticed one of my baby Hyla arbrorea was looking a bit under the weather so I wet my hands and picked him/her up for a closer look. As soon as I did so he/she stretched her back legs right out and sort of lay rigid on my hand. Up until now he/she's been perfectly fine and she eats well enough. When I put him/her back in the tank the legs were pulled back in and he/she began hopping around normally again. What can be wrong with my frog?
The enclosure is a medium sized "pet pal" with silk plants, water dish (using bottled water) and moss as the substrate. This baby is the larger of the three frogs that live in the tank. It sits next to a heat cable that runs through my shelving unit and the frogs are fed on small crickets and fruit flies.
Hope someone can help! |

I have seen this before in young treefrogs, though i have no idea of the cause. It seems the legs become paralyzed when the frogs become even slightly stressed (such as moving them to a different viv etc), but in all other respects, the frogs are fine, eating etc.
I would be very interested if you find out the cause, it is a horrible thing to see. |

I had two red eyed tree frogs die from this kind of thing you know. I can only suggest trying not to stress them at all...and keeping good hygiene... _________________

Were you wearing any kind of deodorant, insect repellent, perfume on your hands? _________________

I wasn't aside from the deoderant I'd put on in the morning. If it's also any help I did move them recently from a slightly smaller tank. I'll leave the little one alone for now and see how it copes. |

It happens with some groups of dart frog also, the main idea around what cuases it is a vitamin/mineral deficiancey (excuse the spelling).
get some calcium magnesium cgma dilte 3ml to 1000ml of water and mist your vivarium with that.
and then use a water soluble vit a few days later.
for young froglets (this is with pumilio) I drip this soloution directly on the back of the frog. _________________ Paul

Do you know where I could buy such a solution. I do dust the crickets with multivits though I can't remember off the top of my head what brand it is. Should I have been using calcium too? |

Bought some of that stuff, I hope it gets here in time. Should I try anything in the mean time? Kicking myself for not offering them calcium more often but then I've only had them three weeks or so and they've all been fine up til now. |

just leave them alone an quite, feed as you have been but try adding some calcium to your suppliments.
Did you buy the liqued vits also? if you did cut out the powder.
the worst thing you can do is fiddle with them and spray them directly with your misters spray the viv as normal just don't spray them directly _________________ Paul
