I wouldn't recommend sand as particles get everywhere and because of the way emps eat they will probably end up with a lot in them too! Also emps like a humid environment and sand isn't great for this either.

About 3 inches or so of damp potting soil/eco earth is a good substrate for emps. It holds moisture well and is safe. Compact it down at first and they will dig and burrow if they choose.

I use a deap substrate of peat for mine this holds the humidity well and they occasionaly like to burrow, cork bark is also handy as they like to hide under this, if housing a few use a few pieces of cork bark placed around their tank as some will prefer to be alone and need their own retreat, keep same size if going for a group and plenty of hiding places as they do kill each other sometimes!

Good luck with them.
