nice animals, but I don't understand why you're using wood shavings for substrate. Is this so the animal can show off it's bright colors? I think that's a little unfair to the animal. I think it's bad enough that we give them little little tiny prison cells to live in. The least we can do is offer them some natural components into their small environment. don't you think?

cheers guys.

Shay I have been trying different substrates and yes you are probably right .. they do look their best on wood shavings but I've been planning on moving it back on to something more 'dirt' based.

I've been encouraging him to wander around the garden quite a lot recently to give him something a bit more natural - my tegus used to really benefit from this.

this completely depends on ones beliefs. To merely keep this animal alive, it doesn't take a very big cage. But to offer this animal a life... a quality life that offers all or a least most of the amenities a wild monitor has, will require a very large cage.

unfortunately ones allowable space, and pocket book get in the way of this moral dilemma more often than not.

cheers
