Hi Andy, very sorry to hear about the outcome for your Bullsnake.Hard to lose a cherished animal under any circumstances. This is the one major drawback to keeping snakes and other reptiles, these creatures can't communicate with us and let us know in time, of their medical needs. Snakes are such wonderfully non complaining creatures. Maybe we should routinely take perfectly healthy looking reptiles for occasional checkouts , to the vets, regardless of cost. I recently lost a fine Tiawan beauty snake to a bad case of gout. I didn't have a clue he was so ill as he was eating so well right up to his sudden death. If he had gout he must have been in pain but had no way of letting me know. The autopsy showed he was getting the wrong kind of protein, which was ultimately blamed on the super feed being given to the high quality rodents I was feeding him. This feed was said to have too many vitamins present. My other snakes are doing fine on the same diet ( apparently ) ..but you never know. Cheers all.

thanks guys, appreciate it

wasn't an easy choice to make but did turn out to be the right one.

well it has put the kibosh on the breeding plans i had installed for her next year but onward and upward as they say.

looking into the possibility of applegate San Diego gophers, not a 'pit' I've encountered before but i believe very similar to Sayi in terms of husbandry and looks. the difference being, i believe, thinner banding and a greater number thereof running down the length of the body but otherwise similar in colouration. fingers crossed on this one!

with a couple of shows coming up i should find something of interest Smile

thanks again
Andy

Hi Andy,

like you said,i think you did the right thing by that snake.

Glad you still want to keep pituophis and annectans would be a real good choice.I've been keeping and breeding San Diegos for 12 years or so and never had a prob with them. Smile
I got some albino annectans eggs cooking at the mo along with some outstanding deppei jani Cool.

All the best for the future mate........onwards and upwards Wink

thanks Jimbo, it is an unfortunate side effect (so to speak) thankfully in nearly 16 years i've only had two other sudden deaths - eating one day, dead the next!!
not a bad idea about vet checks but my vet would need to drop his prices significantly, that trip cost me over £160. I don't begrudge paying it in this instance but I have my limits Smile
(£60 for a consultation!?!)

Hi Al, I did waver a little on the pituophis front for just a moment after that knock back but there's something about them that's got me hooked
(i'm sure you'll know what i'm talking about Smile )
penfold has some annectans due so i've got my fingers crossed for him Very Happy

thanks again
Andy

I certainly do know what your talking about Andy Cool i've been hooked for years. Laughing

Yeah fingers crosssed for penfold and his annectans, they're real nice snakes to work with and the normal coloured ones are lovely snakes.I'm sure you will be more than pleased with annectans.
I'm growing on some nice normals myself that are triple hets from one of my little projects Wink
