Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone had could give me any info on this beautiful Asian species, as i have seen some for sale (CB07) and was thinking about getting one (or two).
I have a bit of info on them. I know about the different subspecies, and the Taiwan (Orthriophis taeniurus friesi), being the most commonly kept in the UK.
However i have had a bit of a problem, on getting an adult size, as i have looked around and from the books that i own, many state different lengths, with 5 feet, 6 feet and 7 feet all being mentioned, could someone confirm a size please?
Also what size viv would they require when adult?
What temperature is best?
What is there temperament like?
Has anyone got any pics of their own?
Thanks in advance _________________ Tom

Adult sizes do appear to vary greatly, I would say probably between 6-8ft as more of a norm but I have heard of larger. Mine is about 7foot
With housing for adults, I believe that this is a species that benefits from a large enclosure, I keep my adult in a 4x2x2 but you could go bigger than that, maybe a 5x2x3??
Temp wise hot end 28°C/82°F cool end 25°C/77°F - they do get stressed if they get too hot.
Temperament can vary greatly, I know of people with some that are as soft as a brush and others that would bite your hand off, if you get one from a hatchling I think that would help a great deal.

wow great thanks.
hmm 8 feet that won't go down well with my parents.
4x2x2 doesn't sound too bad, that could fit in my room lol, i was going to get some royals a while back and was going to get a vivarium of equal size for them, but i changed my mind.
Temperatures sound fine. However it sounds like their temperaments can be a bit dodgy.
How quickly do they grow? would they be ok in a medium contico for a while?
great pictures by the way, they certainly do live up to their name
I am stuck now, i cannot decide between these or trinkets, _________________ Tom

Umm not sure how big a medium contico is tbh lol
They are quick growers, hatchlings between 30-45cm, I think they can reach 3ft by a year. Eat like pigs too.
Trinkets are great too, size wise, adult, 3-4ft.

I had a pair and they got to just over 5ft in year one, 6 1/2 ft but a lot thicker in year two, in year three they got a little longer to 7ft+ but really put on the girth, but then i sold them as I needed the space
At the end of year one they were taking small adult rats with ease, year two adult rats and year three xl rats or 2 med rats _________________ People laugh at me because I am different
